How many goals have you got? No, come on, how many goals have you got written down? For most people the answer is likely to be none. Oh sure, they may have had some goals set for them in a Performance Review at work. However But do they own those goals?
The concept of goal setting would not have survived for as long as it has if there was not some good in it. So why don’t folk set goals?
The answer’s that they do not know how to set goals that will be meaningful for them.
So , I’ll share one of my goals with you. For me this is an important goal because it impacts every area of my life and it also impacts my family. I think of this goal every day; particularly I think of this goal before I get out of bed in the morning. My goal is just to be happy.
I learned in my NLP training that by focussing on being happy I had an achievable goal. Not only is my goal reachable but I am able to work on it each day and I receive many advantages in terms of friends, good health and a pleasant environment.
The first trick to setting good goals is to create goals that never depend on other people for their outcome. For example if you set a goal of being the world number one at anything you right away enter into competition with everyone else in the world who wants to be good at that particular thing. On the other hand if you make it your goal to be the best you can be at something the only person you are competing with is yourself and your own lofty standards.
The second trick to setting worthwhile and galvanizing goals is to write them in the present tense, as if you have already attained them e.g. “I am happy”. Or, “I am the best public speaker I can possibly be”.
Try setting your goals in this fashion and see what a difference it makes.
Imagine a precision instrument that records the actions, words and feelings of the best performers. Then download that data to a powerful decoder that analyses and codes the behaviour. Transfer the code to your personal control panel so that you can reproduce excellence at will. This is how NLP Techniques work. NLP Practitioner David Ferrers will show you how to build your own control panel during Business Coaching, or at one of his NLP Training workshops or during NLP Practitioner Training in India.
